I was on Facebook and came across a link to the screening for “Kid Creole and His Coconuts” by Adriana Kaegi at the Chelsea Art Museum. I remember dancing around to “Endicott” and the spicy “Que Pasa/Me no Pop I”, my Coati Mundi favorite. My cousin Fatima and I would do some crazy salsa moves to that one and ham it up Coati style! Later on in the 90′s I would become friends with coconut Cheryl Poirier. She always had outrageous stories from their world tours and adventures but she never mentioned her affair with August, married to Adriana. I was slightly embarrassed to find out at the screening this delicate detail. Read the rest of this entry →

“KID CREOLE AND MY COCONUTS” is a delightful, danceable and very personal documentary memoir chronicling Swiss – born artist/choreographer/designer Adriana Kaegi’s adventures as Mama Coconut — co-founder of the 1980s multicultural tropical funk machine called Kid Creole and the Coconuts and wife to August Darnell the mercurial man behind the glamorous combo. What was filled with fans but felt like a sauna? The Twin Sister record release party at Glasslands this past Friday. What is it about extreme temperature conditions when I go to see Twin Sister? The first time I saw them live, I’m honored to say, was when they played at my birthday party/photography exhibit in January of 2009 at Superfine Brooklyn. It was their first time playing together as Twin Sister and it was the coldest day of the Winter. The next time I saw them was a year later at Cameo, another record cold and some hail. Friday night Glasslands was a wave of atomic heat. Read the rest of this entry →

The Maybelles
Jan Bell, Hilary Hawke, and Philippa Thompson
The Maybelles 2010 led by Jan Bell (guitar) are based in Brooklyn, NY and comprise of three part harmony, guitar, fiddle, and banjo. Originally from Yorkshire, Jan has won several awards for her original songs, including Independent Music Awards Alt. Country album of the year. Last year she played both sides of the pond from the Masters Stage at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival to Glastonbury. Hilary Hawke (banjo) – has played with The Maybelles since 2006 including when The Maybelles opened for Wanda Jackson; The International Bluegrass Music Awards (IBMA) in Nashville; Official showcase at The International Folk Alliance in Memphis; and rave reviews for her banjo stylings at NXNE in Toronto. Philippa Thompson (violin) – As a multi-instrumentalist brings fiddle, accordion, percussion and you can catch her playing the saw on a tune, too! Jan and Philippa believe they may have invented the ‘Dueling Spoons’, which goes very nicely with Philippa and Hilary’s ‘Dueling Washboards’. The Maybelles would like to thank their Texas pals, Melissa and Katy for all the great times!
